Wiki

What is IRMAA, and why did my premium suddenly jump?

IRMAA is an income-related monthly adjustment amount. Higher reported income from two years prior can raise Part B and Part D premiums. A life-changing event—retirement, marriage, divorce, or loss of income—may qualify you to request a reduction with Social Security Form SSA-44.

What is Medicare Advantage?

An all-in-one alternative to Original Medicare from private insurers. Plans often include hospital and medical coverage and may add drugs, dental, vision, or fitness benefits—usually with network rules and prior authorization.

Can I have Medigap and Medicare Advantage at the same time?

No. Medigap only works with Original Medicare (Parts A and B). If you join a Medicare Advantage plan, you generally cannot use a Medigap policy alongside it, and new Medigap rights after leaving Advantage are limited outside guaranteed-issue windows.

What is the Part D late-enrollment penalty—and does it ever go away?

If you go 63 or more days without creditable drug coverage after your Initial Enrollment Period, Medicare can add a permanent surcharge to your Part D premium. The penalty usually continues for as long as you have Part D. Creditable coverage from an employer or union can protect you if documented.

What is the skilled nursing “3-day rule”?

Original Medicare typically requires a medically necessary inpatient hospital stay of at least three consecutive days (not counting the discharge day) before covering a skilled nursing facility stay. Observation status does not count. Some Medicare Advantage plans waive or modify this rule—check your Evidence of Coverage.

What are Medicare Supplements?

Medigap policies help cover Original Medicare deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments. They work alongside Original Medicare and use standardized plan letters in most states.

What is Medicare Part D?

Optional prescription drug coverage. Get it as a standalone plan with Original Medicare, or through many Medicare Advantage plans that include drug benefits. Formularies, tiers, and pharmacy networks vary by plan.

How do I find a 5-star plan?

Enter your ZIP on the Medicare Reviews homepage to compare plans near you—star ratings, premiums, and benefits—then confirm doctors and medications before enrolling.
